How to Manage Stress

Stress is a part of life; things don’t always turn out the way you want them to. The bills keep on piling up, there are family responsibilities you have to deal with and deadlines are just around the corner. This does not mean that you have to feel overwhelmed and drive yourself to an early grave .These challenges are difficult but there are some ways you can do to manage stress. Take control of how you respond to these stressors with these guidelines.
Identify your stressors
To be able to manage stress, you must first identify what causes your stress. Take time to reflect on the real causes of your stress and jot them down on a piece of paper. Remember that real stressors are more often the not overlooked. Examine your thoughts, attitude and habits that give you stress. To be able to manage stress effectively, you must accept that you are responsible for some of the stressors you identified.
Examine your current coping mechanism
Identify how you cope up with stressors. Are your coping mechanisms healthy or unhealthy? Do these mechanism help solve the problem or add more problems on top of the ones you already have? Some bad ways of coping with stress include excessive drinking, smoking, lashing out on other people, overeating and avoiding people in general.
Healthy ways to handle stress
After identifying coping mechanisms that do not contribute to your health and wellness, it is best to adopt healthier ways to handle stress. There are four strategies you can apply for to manage stress.
Tip #1: Avoid pointless stressors
Not all fights are worth fighting, so learn to walk away from situations that will lead to unnecessary stress.
 Do not bite off more than you can chew- Do not take on anything that is more than you can handle. You have to say no and curb your impulses to say yes all the time.
 Avoid toxic people- Leave the people who make you feel inadequate and bad about yourself. In case you are unable to eliminate their presence in your life, minimize your interaction with these people as much as possible.
 Avoid controversial or taboo topics- When conversing with other people, refrain from including religion, politics and morality issues. These topics will eventually cause arguments.
 Environment- Do not listen, watch or read things that will make you feel anxious. Clean up your cluttered desk and add small potted plants on your desk to make you feel more relaxed.
 Make a to-do-list- You have a thousand and one things to do and you don’t know where to begin. Write down all the things you have to do and prioritize what needs to be done as soon as possible and what are those things that can be scheduled for another time.
Tip #2: Modify the circumstance
Sometimes, you cannot avoid stressful situations but you can modify them instead. Often times, effective communication is the key to make your day run more smoothly.
 Speak your mind- If you have some concerns and you feel that you have to let other people know, speak up. Express yourself in a manner that is respectful and none threatening. The way you deliver the message is very important. Remember to modulate your voice and avoid gestures that send the wrong message.
 Assert yourself- Be proactive, do not allow other people to walk all over you. If you have to leave a party by 9 pm, stand firm to your decision and leave by 9 pm.
 Time management- Cramming will do you no good. Plan ahead of time and you will be able to deliver satisfactory results.
Tip #3: Adapt
When you are unable to change the stressor, change your attitude towards the stressor.
 Look on the bright side- Things will be easier if you have a positive attitude towards things. A positive attitude will beget positive results.
 Count your blessings- Sometimes, you focus on what you don’t have instead of the things that you have. Take a moment to appreciate the things that you have. Remember that what you take for granted, might get taken away from you.
 Standards- Set a reasonable standard. Learn to accept that sometimes good enough is actually good enough.
Tip #4: Accept that there are some things that you cannot change.
 Beyond control- There are things that are beyond your control, the best thing to do is to accept these circumstances. Focus on what you can do when faced with difficult situations.
 Forgive- Forgive yourself and other people for past transgressions and learn from these mistakes. It will do you no good to dwell on the past, you will not be able to live in the preset.
